When Lyman moved to Louisville he became very active in the civil rights community, for example he was the president of the NAACP in Louisville. A member of the Kentucky Civil Liberties union, and also a founder of the Board of the J.O. Blanton house, senior residence hall for seniors in his fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha. Lyman used the positions he was in to fight for civil rights acts, such as equal pay for African American teachers, residential housing, and public accommodations. One of the major things he is known for is the desegregation of the University of Kentucky. Lyman Sued the University of Kentucky for admission into the graduate program, and ended up winning.
